The coast gives San Diego its outdoor shows, and the marine layer gives them their temperature. Even in summer, the air off the water turns cool after sunset, so a jacket is never a bad call.

On Shelter Island, Humphreys Concerts by the Bay has run outdoor seasons since 1982 on a 1,400 seat stage beside the marina. Boaters in kayaks and small runabouts fill the channel on show nights to listen from the water. Indoors next door, Humphreys Backstage Live keeps a smaller stage going year round.

Inland a bit, the Midway District puts Pechanga Arena and SOMA side by side on Sports Arena Boulevard, a few minutes from Ocean Beach, the neighborhood where a lot of San Diego reggae got its start. Up the coast in La Jolla, the Epstein Family Amphitheater sits on the UC San Diego campus with a steep lawn and reserved seats.

Getting there

The Trolley serves only one of these well. The Blue Line's UC San Diego Central Campus station is right beside the Epstein, and campus lots require a permit every day of the week, so the train saves a step. For the Midway, buses run between Old Town Transit Center and Sports Arena Boulevard, and the arena asks people not to park at neighboring businesses, which tow. Shelter Island is a drive for most people, so leave extra time on summer weekends.
