This side of the county runs on two rooms that could hardly be less alike, a theater on a small town main street and an amphitheater that holds about 20,500.

In El Cajon, The Magnolia sits on Main Street downtown. It opened in 1977 as the East County Performing Arts Center, the city closed it in 2009 to save money, and it reopened as The Magnolia in September 2019 after an $8 million remodel. It seats about 1,200, and the restaurants along Main Street make an easy dinner before the show. There is a lot on the north side off Magnolia Avenue and a larger garage to the east. The 8 is the way in by car, and the Orange and Green Trolley lines end at the El Cajon Transit Center, a short ride from Main Street.

The amphitheatre in Chula Vista

Down in the South Bay, the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre splits its crowd between reserved seats and a big lawn. It opened in 1998 as Coors Amphitheatre and has also gone by Cricket Wireless, Sleep Train and Mattress Firm Amphitheatre, so older tickets may say any of those. It sits just off the 805, about 20 minutes from downtown without traffic.

Most people drive, and the lot is huge. Get there early, since cars stack up at the entrances on busy nights, and expect the exit to take a while after a big show. Lawn tickets mean sitting on the grass, so check what the venue allows you to bring.
